State Bank Of Pakistan (NBP) (Urdu :نیشنل بینک آف پاکستان) Is A Government-owned Multinational Commercial Bank Of Pakistan, A Subsidiary Of State Bank Of Pakistan. It Is Headquartered In Karachi, Pakistan. As Of December 2022, It Has Over 1,500 Branches In Pakistan.

The Bank Provides A Variety Of Commercial And Public Sector Banking Services, Including Debt Equity Markets, Corporate Investment Banking, Retail And Consumer Banking, Agricultural Finance, Treasury Services. In 2020, The Bank Was Designated As A Domestic Systemically Important Bank (D-SIB) By State Bank Of Pakistan.

HISTORY

  • In 1949, The State Bank Of Pakistan (NBP) Was Established Under The State Bank Of Pakistan Regulations 1949 And Is Owned By The Government. NBP Acted As The Agent Of The Central Bank Where The National Bank Did Not Have Its Own Branch. It Also Undertook The Financial Operations Of The Government. Its First Branches Were Located In The Jute Growing Areas Of East Pakistan. Offices Were Subsequently Established In Karachi And Lahore.
  • In 1950, NBP Established A Branch In Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
  • In 1955, NBP Had Branches In London And Calcutta.
  • In 1957, NBP Established A Branch In Baghdad, Iraq.
  • In 1962 NBP Established A Branch In Dar Es Salaam, Tanganyika.
  • In 1964, The Iraqi Government Nationalized NBP's Baghdad Branch.
  • In 1965, The Indian Government Seized The Kolkata Branch During The Outbreak Of Hostilities Between India And Pakistan.
  • In 1967, The Tanzanian Government Nationalized The Dar Es Salaam Branch.
  • In 1971 NBP Acquired Two Branches Of Bank Of China, One In Karachi And One In Chittagong. At The Time Of East Pakistan's Separation, NBP Lost Its Branch There. NBP Merged With Eastern Mercantile Bank And Eastern Bank Corporation.
  • In 1974, The Government Of Pakistan Nationalized NBP. As Part Of The Consolidation Of The Banking Sector, NBP Acquired Bahawalpur Bank.
  • In 1977, NBP Opened An Offshore Branch In Cairo.
  • In 1994, NBP Merged With Mehran Bank.
  • In 1997, The NBP Branch In Ashgabat, Turkmenistan Began Operations.
  • In 2000, NBP Opened A Representative Office In Almaty, Kazakhstan.
  • In 2001, The State Bank Of Pakistan And The Bank Of England Agreed To Allow Only 2 Pakistani Banks To Operate In The UK. NBP And Union Bank Agreed To Merge Their Operations To Form Pakistan International Bank, Of Which NBP Would Own 45% And Union Bank Would Own 55%.
  • In 2002, Pakistan International Bank Was Renamed United National Banking Company Limited (UNB). The Ownership Structure Of UNB Is The Same As Before. The Only Change In The Ownership Structure Is That UNB Was Recently Privatized In Pakistan And Now The Pakistani Government Owns 49% And The United Foreign Consortium In Abu Dhabi Owns 51%.

NBP Needs To Redefine Its Role And Shed Its Image As A Public Sector Bank To Become A Modern Commercial Bank. It Has Sold 23.2% Share Of The Stock Market And Although It Has Not Been Fully Privatized Like The Other Three Public Sector Banks, Partial Privatization Has Taken Place. It Is Now Listed On The Pakistan Stock Exchange.

  • 2003 NBP Opened A Branch In Kabul And Installed Afghanistan's First ATM There.
  • 2005 NBP Closed Its Offshore Branch In Cairo.
  • 2010 NBP Opened A Branch In Karaganda (Kazakhstan).
  • In 2011 NBP Opened A Representative Office In Toronto (Canada).

A Series Of Initiatives Have Been Taken In Terms Of Institutional Restructuring, Changes To Field Structures, Policies And Procedures, Internal Control Systems (with Particular Emphasis On Corporate Governance), Adoption Of Capital Adequacy Standards Under The Basel III Framework, Upgrading Of IT Infrastructure And Development Of Human Resources.

State Bank Of Pakistan Has Established An Extensive Branch Network In Pakistan With 1,450 Branches And 1,350 ATMs, And Operates In Major Business Centres Abroad. The Bank Has Representative Offices In Beijing, Tashkent, Chicago And Toronto. It Has Agency Agreements With More Than 3,000 Correspondent Banks Worldwide.

The Bank Has Achieved Significant Growth Between 2000 And 2006. In 2016, Total Assets Were Estimated At Pakistani Rs 1,799bn And Total Deposits Amounted To Pakistani Rs 165.7bn. Profit Before Tax Increased To Pakistani Rs 37.14 Billion. Earnings Per Share Jumped To Pakistani Rs 10.69. The Increase In Profits Was Achieved Through Strong Growth In Core Bank Revenues. Through Growth In Loan Portfolio As Well As Increase In Interest Spreads, Total Interest Income Increased To 114 Billion Pakistani Rupees. Total Advances Increased To 781 Billion Pakistani Rupees. It Ranges From Providing Credit To The Unbanked Segment Under NBP Karobar, To Small And Medium Enterprises, To Agricultural Loans, To Large Corporate Customers.

It Has Taken Various Measures To Facilitate Remittances By Pakistanis Overseas. In 2002, The Bank Signed An Agreement With Western Union To Expand The Recorded Remittance Base.
